CLASSIC MYANMAR CULTURAL TOURS
Ultimate Myanmar Discovery
15 Days: Yangon → Bago → Golden Rock → Mandalay → Pyin Oo Lwin → Hsipaw → Bagan → Salay → Mt. Popa → Kalaw → Inle Lake
15 Days / 14 Nights · Private Guided Tour
Tour Description
Ultimate Myanmar Discovery is our most comprehensive journey through the Golden Land — a private, expertly guided 15-day overland tour connecting Yangon, historic Bago, the sacred Golden Rock of Kyaiktiyo, Mandalay and its ancient capitals, the colonial hill stations of Pyin Oo Lwin and Kalaw, the Shan railway town of Hsipaw, Bagan and its lesser-known neighbor Salay, the sacred volcano of Mount Popa, and Inle Lake. Almost the entire route is travelled overland by private car rather than by domestic flight, giving you an unmatched window into the changing landscapes, hill tribes, and everyday life that connect Myanmar's headline destinations. Highlights include the gravity-defying Golden Rock, the ancient royal capitals around Mandalay, the Gokteik Viaduct and Shan Palace of Hsipaw, more than 2,000 temples across the plains of Bagan, the quiet riverside monastery town of Salay, the nat-spirit shrine atop Mount Popa, and the floating gardens of Inle Lake. This is the itinerary for travelers who want to see Myanmar in real depth, all backed by a choice of 3-star, 4-star, or 5-star accommodation.
Why Visit Myanmar?
Often called Asia's “golden land,” Myanmar remains one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding and least-crowded destinations for travelers seeking authentic culture rather than well-trodden tourist trails.
- Three sacred wonders in one trip — the golden spire of Shwedagon Pagoda, the gravity-defying Golden Rock of Kyaiktiyo, and the temple-studded plains of Bagan together form the heart of Myanmar's Buddhist heritage.
- The road less flown — this itinerary is almost entirely overland, revealing rural villages, hill-tribe markets, and everyday life across the country that flying between airports would skip entirely.
- Beyond the highlights — Salay's colonial monastery town and Hsipaw's Shan Palace and Gokteik Viaduct are rarely seen by travelers on shorter itineraries.
- Layers of royal history — Mandalay, Amarapura, Sagaing, and Mingun together tell the story of Myanmar's last royal dynasties in a way no single city can.
- Cool colonial hill stations — Pyin Oo Lwin and Kalaw offer refreshing changes of pace, climate, and colonial-era atmosphere between the temple plains.
- A serene highland finale — Inle Lake's floating gardens and stilted villages offer a completely different landscape to close the journey.
- Genuine hospitality — Myanmar opened widely to international travelers only in the last two decades, and the warmth and curiosity of local communities still feels unscripted.
- Excellent value — with fewer international arrivals than neighboring Thailand or Vietnam, Myanmar offers premium experiences and boutique hotels at comparatively accessible prices.
Best Season to Visit
Myanmar has three distinct seasons, and each shapes the trip differently. For this itinerary, the cool, dry season offers the most comfortable and scenic conditions for the many overland drives — and is the only window for the optional Balloons Over Bagan flight.
| Season | Months | Conditions |
| Cool & Dry (Best) | November – February | Comfortable daytime temperatures (20–28°C), cooler still in Pyin Oo Lwin, Hsipaw, and Kalaw's highlands, clear skies for Kyaiktiyo and Bagan, and hot-air ballooning. Peak season — book early. |
| Hot | March – May | Hot and dry across the lowlands (often exceeding 35°C in Bagan and Mandalay), though the hill towns stay noticeably cooler. Balloon flights typically end by late March. |
| Rainy (Monsoon) | June – October | Warm with periodic rain showers, lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower rates; mountain roads to Kyaiktiyo, Hsipaw, and Kalaw can be slower and mistier, and the long overland transfer days may take longer. |
Recommendation: for this 15-day itinerary, with its many long overland drives, November through February delivers the best combination of comfortable travel days, clear conditions across all regions, and the only season for the optional Balloons Over Bagan sunrise flight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this 15-day itinerary designed for?
Ultimate Myanmar Discovery is our most in-depth program, designed for travelers with time to spare who want to see Myanmar beyond the standard highlights — including Hsipaw, Salay, and two colonial hill stations — largely via scenic overland travel.
Why is almost the entire tour by private car instead of domestic flights?
Travelling overland reveals a side of Myanmar that flying skips entirely — rural villages, hill-tribe markets, changing landscapes, and everyday life along the way. The only flight in this itinerary is the final Heho–Yangon departure connection; all other domestic flight alternatives can be arranged instead on request.
Are the long overland drive days manageable?
The three longest transfer days (Golden Rock–Mandalay, Hsipaw–Bagan, and Bagan–Kalaw) run approximately 7–10 hours with comfort stops. Each can be split into two days with an extra overnight if you would prefer a more relaxed pace — just let us know when booking.
Are lunch and dinner included?
Only daily breakfast at the hotel is included. Lunches and dinners are left to your own arrangement, giving you the freedom to try local restaurants and street food at your own pace — your guide is happy to recommend options in each city.
What is Balloons Over Bagan (BOB) and is it included?
Balloons Over Bagan is Myanmar's original hot-air balloon operator, offering sunrise flights over Bagan's temple plains between October and March. It is an optional add-on at additional cost, not included in the base tour price — let us know if you'd like it added to your itinerary.
Do I need a visa to visit Myanmar?
Most nationalities require a visa, obtainable as an e-Visa online before travel or through a Myanmar embassy. We recommend applying at least 2–3 weeks before departure.
Can I choose my hotel category?
Yes. This tour is offered in 3-star, 4-star, and 5-star hotel categories at different price points for most destinations — see the Hotel Options and Tour Cost sections. Note that Golden Rock, Pyin Oo Lwin, Hsipaw, and Kalaw have more limited accommodation options regardless of category chosen elsewhere.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
October through April offers the most comfortable temperatures and clearest skies for the many overland drives and sunrise/sunset viewing, and is the only window for the optional Balloons Over Bagan flight.
